Head and Neck Ultrasound Training Center
I have been trained for 14 years in Germany mainly in Head and Neck surgical oncology (parotid, thyroid, larynx and pharynx) and in addition I have significant expertise in Head and Neck Ultrasound which is very important for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with head and neck tumors.
Ultrasound is a very important tool for the ENT doctor that expands his diagnostic and therapeutic abilities. In Germany, it is a self-evident equipment of every clinic and office. (University Hospital Erlangen)
Personally, I hold the highest instructor degree (DEGUM III) in head and neck ultrasound in Germany, which allows me not only to participate but also to organize ultrasound seminars. I am the only ENT specialist who has been organizing such seminars in Greece since 2022. Ultrasound Seminar 2025 (orl.med.uoi.gr)
Since I returned to Greece in 2019, I became the first hospital doctor in Greece to obtain the right to perform and teach Head and Neck Ultrasound to Otolaryngologists in our country. Furthermore, I am the only ENT Surgeon who has the right to train in Head and Neck Ultrasound within the framework of an official 6-month term at the National Institute of Otolaryngology, and I have already trained specialized ENT colleagues in Ultrasound: Ms. Lentiona Basiari assistant curator at PGNI), Aikaterini Lianou (assistant curator of IKA and lecturer of the Department of Nursing), Gola Eleni (ιδιώτης ΩΡΛ Ιωάννινα), Μαρία Σαχανίδου (ιδιώτης ΩΡΛ Δράμα)
My vision is to create in Ioannina the first and largest reference center for Head and Neck Ultrasound in Greece and to become a training center so that the use of ultrasound can be generalized among Greek ENT colleagues, something that will have significant benefits for patients, especially with tumors of the Head and Neck (salivary glands, thyroid, cervix) and beyond.
In addition to the seminars we organize and the training of specialized colleagues that has already begun, we have begun conducting doctoral theses on the topic of Ultrasound and Elastography of Salivary Glands and Thyroid and an elective course at the Medical School on the topic of Introduction to Ultrasound of the Head and Neck. Finally, we have submitted proposals for competitive research programs with the aim of:
Development of an artificial intelligence program for the automatic diagnosis of parotid and thyroid tumors (ultrasound biopsy) and avoidance of surgery in benign lesions! (pubmed). Technical intelligence is a field with enormous development and potential in recent years. The development of special algorithms already allows for some diseases to analyze images of the patient and diagnose his condition with great accuracy, which in some cases surpasses that of experienced clinicians.
