Professor of Otolaryngology and Director of the ENT Clinic at the P.G.N.I., Georgios Psychogios<\/strong>, has long-standing experience<\/strong> in Thyroid Surgery<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. In addition, in the use of ultrasound<\/strong> for the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands<\/strong>. He has dealt extensively with the application of thyroid ultrasound as a tool in the daily clinical practice of ENT and in better surgical preparation. In addition, he collaborates closely with fellow Endocrinologists and Nuclear Physicians for the treatment of diseases that do not require surgical treatment and for the correct surgical indication in diseases that require surgical treatment, which he undertakes.<\/p>

Professor thyroid<\/strong> is a superficial organ located in front of the trachea and can be examined in detail and reliably with the help of thyroid ultrasound.<\/p>

The ultrasound<\/strong> is very important<\/strong> in the diagnosis<\/strong> of most diseases of the thyroid gland and adjacent organs, such as the various forms of thyroiditis<\/strong> (Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis, DeQuervain's subacute sialadenitis) goiter<\/strong>, , macrocalcifications<\/strong>, , cysts<\/strong> and of course benign<\/strong> and malignant nodules.<\/strong>.<\/p>

Particularly with regard to the assessment of thyroid nodules<\/strong> the use of a standardized assessment system (TI-RAD, <\/strong>Thyroid Imaging Reporting And Data System)<\/strong> has been developed and established , allowing a reliable assessment of the risk of malignancy <\/strong>(thyroid cancer) in a nodule and the decision for further tests such as ultrasound-guided biopsy (FNA)<\/strong>.<\/p>

Beyond diagnosis, ultrasound is necessary<\/strong> for performing ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA)<\/strong> of thyroid nodules for cytological examination or core needle biopsy (cutting needle biopsy = CNB)<\/strong> for pathological examination and a more reliable result.<\/p>

The elastography<\/strong><\/a> is an ultrasound technique that allows the measurement of the elasticity and hardness of tissues during thyroid ultrasound<\/strong>. Elastography takes advantage of the fact that malignant tissues are harder<\/strong> than benign or normal ones, as a result of which it can give us very important information about the severity of a tumor. In particular, the application of elastography to the thyroid gland has been studied extensively and offers particularly reliable results\u00a0Professor Mr. Psychogios has particular clinical experience and research involvement in the subject. In addition, the clinic has a state-of-the-art<\/span> ultrasound scanner with 4th generation Elastography capability Virtual Touch Tissue imaging Quantification Shear Wave Elastography (VTIQ) .<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative monitoring:<\/strong><\/a>: Preoperative localization of the exact location of a nodule with ultrasound contributes decisively to the correct selection of the appropriate surgical technique which, together with neuromonitoring, contributes to the protection of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the reduction of surgical time. Postoperatively, the use of ultrasound significantly helps in the diagnosis of possible hematoma or inflammation.<\/p>

Research work<\/strong>: The doctor has significant research work in both ultrasound and surgery of the thyroid gland and parathyroid glands, which began during his residency at the ENT clinic of the University Hospital of Erlangen, Germany, which is one of the largest clinics in Germany and Europe.<\/p>
